Play the Field is a new breed of orchestral
festival. World class, classical music concerts in a relaxed, open and welcoming
environment. No rules and no restrictions to your enjoyment...watch the
sunset, gaze at the stars, eat great food, drink local tipples and
imbibe incredible music. Everyone’s welcome, from the music
shy to the musically versed, via the lover of trip hop!! We want to
break down the misconception that classical music is stuffy and only
for the elite or brainy. By shrugging off the old school image we hope
to encourage even more people to open their hearts and minds to this
incredible form of music.
The conductor and the dragon...
Charles Hazlewood,
world famous conductor, the BBC's 'face of classical music' and the mastermind behind Play
the Field is working in partnership with Somerset friend, BBC Dragons' Den investor and entrepreneur Deborah Meaden to bring this classical music event and his dream to life. I’ve been looking for an opportunity for several years to bring my work
'home', to create a platform for world-class music-making in the depths
of the West Country and to encourage a wider audience to experience the
wonders of classical music. In partnership with Deborah Meaden, Play
the Field is the result. I can’t think of a better environment for a
classical concert than in a field near Glastonbury Tor. Out in the open air,
because you’ll be more relaxed I believe it will encourage a purer
response to the music... you’ll hear more in the music and you’ll get
more out of the music. Plus, at Play the Field parents can relax and
introduce their children to the joy of live orchestral music.
I love Deborah’s can do attitude. If an idea feels right and sits well
with Deborah she just sets her mind to it and makes it happen and
that’s exactly the case with Play the Field. She applies herself with
such enthusiasm to everything she gets involved in. She’s a pragmatic
optimist, taking a long term view of projects. From the start there was
no question in her mind that this would be a one off venture. Deborah
intends to make Play the Field an annual event, and I’m not arguing!
